Last fall, Thrall began inter-seeding with A1-A4 bentgrass and repeated the process this spring. They become less interested in the other stuff.” Get them right and the end-user’s focus narrows. You focus on the greens, then the greens and then the greens. His other big message was that it’s all about the greens. We were going to do something to make it better. “Even it was a small improvement, it didn’t matter. “Jeffery would always start each day telling us that we were going to make the golf course better that day,” he says. Thrall was an assistant to Connell at Columbia Country Club and says he will always be thankful for two philosophies he carried away from that time. Thrall also “picked at” former boss and Carolinas GCSA past-president Jeff Connell, now at Fort Jackson Golf Club on the eastern side of town. ![]() They both said we needed a starting point, we needed to establish a baseline and work from there.” They confirmed that we were on the right track by just concentrating on the very basics. So Chris and Derek’s input was invaluable. “Most of the research over the past 10 or 15 years has all been geared to the ultradwarfs. “I mean, I was guessing basically,” Thrall says. Soon after, Derek Oglesby of Corbin Turf and Ornamental Supply, who had maintained Crenshaw in Memphis, TN made a similar visit in response to a call from Thrall. “Two or three days later he just showed up,” Thrall says. Williams managed bentgrass when he was across town at Spring Valley Country Club. So Thrall “leaned heavily.” He first called Chris Williams now with Helena Chemical Company. “It was the only time in the past 10 years when I questioned what I was doing. “There was a lot of self doubt in those first 90 days,” Thrall says. Not surprisingly, there were a lot of nights when sleep was hard to come by. “Talk about feeling like the one-legged guy in a butt-kicking contest,” he says. Thrall found one hose on the property, a leaky 40-ft. ![]() Dollar spot was rampant on the ageing Crenshaw and Penncross mix. On arrival three greens had barely 60 percent grass coverage and the rest were about 90 percent with the worst loss around the fringes and slopes. We did all we could to give ourselves a fighting chance. “I found this relic of a spiker at the shop so we pulled it out and got it going and we spiked the heck out of them religiously. “I was flying by the seat of my pants,” Thrall says. From a maintenance perspective it was “Zero.” And, by his own admission, his previous experience on bentgrass was limited to putting. ![]() That was all the reminder he needed to know that while he may be off his knees he was on a grass that had brought so many other superintendents to theirs. When he started last August 3 the mercury topped 100 degrees with an overnight low of 82. While they were now off growing ultradwarfs, Thrall would become the exception at The Windermere Club, maintaining the only bentgrass greens left in Columbia, SC. Really, it was more like walking in through the exit that everyone else had tromped out of. Eventually he found one but it wasn’t exactly the front door. So in 2014, he started poking around again, looking for a way back in. “I’d hang out there all day then get picked up at 7pm. “The cleaners had to unlock a door to let me in,” he says. Before a long commute to work in northern California his parents would drop him at their country club at 6am. Thrall had grown up in golf and was raised in part by locker room attendants and assistant pros. “If someone ever sees me kneeling again they need to shoot me.” “I felt like it was something that had run its course.” But then his knees started to hurt. “I swore off the golf business,” he says. Pro, superintendent, general manager, even course owner, he’d chewed each of those bones at some point over nearly two decades but in the end the game spat him out. He’d pretty much done it all up until then. ![]() Burned out, ticked off and fed up, he quit the only thing he knew and went laying tile for a friend. Life in the golf industry literally brought Troy Thrall to his knees in 2013.

![]() This is because tattoo ink lays below your natural skin pigment in the dermis, as your tattoo fades it may appear that it is fading faster than someone with lighter skin tone. So don’t get too hung up on that 1/2 inch difference if you’re torn between choosing a size since we can adjust this in studio. Ephemerals applied to skin with more melanin may appear to fade faster than on skin with less melanin. For example: A smaller sized tattoo might look visually larger on your shoulder than on your thigh. Note: Sometimes a tattoo might look larger or smaller on your body depending on your own unique portions and the placement. Our general rule is “the more the ink, the slower the fade.” If you’re worried about fade time, we recommend starting with a Subtle or Standout, but the Statement is the best bang for your buck. Statements allow for the most detail and shading and tend to take the longest to fade. Just think of nine 1 inch blocks to arrange however you’d like. Just smaller than the height of a credit card or a little bit bigger than a AA Battery. So are two US quarters next to each other. Stack them into a large square or line ‘em up for a skinny tattoo. The fact that it’s made-to-fade is an added benefit, not a detractor from the price. Vice Admiral Bertram Ramsay directed the efforts, leading a team working out of a room deep inside the Dover cliffs that had once contained a generator known as a dynamo (giving the operation its name). On the evening of May 26, the British began the evacuation from Dunkirk, using the codename Operation Dynamo. Hitler gave the tanks the go-ahead again on May 26, but by that time the Allies had gained crucial time to put their preparations in place. Hitler’s decision has been attributed to his generals’ worries over a possible Allied counterattack (like the failed one on May 21 south of Arras) as well as Luftwaffe commander Hermann Goering’s insistence that his air forces could prevent any evacuation attempt at Dunkirk. In planning this risky operation, the Allies got a helping hand from a surprising source: Adolf Hitler, who on May 24 gave the order to halt the advance of German panzer divisions bearing down on Dunkirk. At first, British command opposed evacuation, and French forces wanted to hold out as well.īut with the BEF and its allies forced back on the French port of Dunkirk, located on the shores of the North Sea just 10 km (6.2 miles) from the Belgian border, Churchill soon became convinced evacuation was the only option. Meanwhile, in London, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain had resigned under pressure on May 13, making way for a new wartime coalition government headed by Winston Churchill. Soon after the blitzkrieg began, German forces invaded France-not along the Maginot Line, which the Allies had expected, but through the Ardennes Forest, moving steadily along the Somme Valley toward the English Channel.Īs they advanced, German forces cut off all communication and transport between the northern and southern branches of Allied forces, pushing several hundred thousand Allied troops in the north into an increasingly small sliver of the French coast.īy May 19, General John Gort, commander of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) had begun to weigh the possibility of evacuating his entire force by sea in order to save them from certain annihilation by the approaching Nazi troops. ![]() In the face of such a coordinated strategy, superior air power and highly mobile ground forces supported by panzer tanks, all three countries would succumb quickly: The Germans occupied Luxembourg on May 10, the Netherlands on May 14 and Belgium by the end of the month. On May 10, 1940, the so-called “phony war” ended decisively when Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium in a blitzkrieg (German for “lightning war”) attack. ![]() The Strait of Dover, where the distance between England and France is just 21 miles across the English Channel, is located to the southwest.īecause of its seaside location near the borders of three European powers, Dunkirk (known as Dunkerque in French) and the surrounding area have been the site of centuries of commerce and travel, as well as numerous bloody battles. They viewed Europe's power through their massive empires, and they emulated by invading and conquering other Asian countries. Because of its very limited resources, Japan realized it needed natural resources to industrialize and compete with the West. With the arrival of Perry, Japan realized they were behind the Western world (Europe and America), and from the start of the Meiji (Enlightenment) Era in 1868, Japan began sending people to Europe and America to learn everything they could in order to catch up with the West. Perry demanded Japan to open to trade with the West. Biff which is capable of sincere compassion and Happy who receives consolation through women represents two sides of Willy Loman, but Willy favors Biff more than Happy. It opens and closes the play, and serves as a haunting glimpse into Willy’s regrets and the cyclical nature of the relationship between fathers and sons. In the process, he demonstrates that the American dream, while a powerful vehicle of aspiration, can also turn a human being into a product or commodity whose sole value is his financial worth. The sound of flute music occurs at key points throughout Death of a Salesman. By sacrificing himself at the end of the play in order to get his family the money from his life insurance policy, Willy literally kills himself for money. But the real tragedy of the play is not that Willy fails to achieve the financial success promised in his American dream, but rather that he buys into the dream so thoroughly that he ignores the tangible things around him, such as the love of his family, while pursuing the success he hopes will bring his family security.
